Lo-fi emcee dusty tape rhythms

Theory Hazit and Rattlehawk

Portland, Oregon artists Theory Hazit and Rattlehawk come together over a mutual love for old time sounds and experimenting with tape warble.

Theory Hazit’s extensive background as emcee, beatsmith, and filmmaker has formidable credentials under his producer’s belt for names such as Redman, Jaden Smith, Kokane, Mr. Lif, Lecrae, Sho Baraka, Onry Ozzborn, Chris Rivers, and Dag Savage. In addition, his latest visual work includes the debut of his “Distorted” film. After over a decade of hip-hop releases, he has joined up with collaborator Rattlehawk.

With years of performing in noise, punk, and surf rock projects, Rattlehawk began exploring electronic music production in the 1990s. He has worked with artists such as Guilty Simpson, Portugal. The Man, Spencer Moody (Murder City Devils), Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox), Boots Riley, and Vursatyl (Lifesavas, Blackalicious). All of his work consists of original compositions, with no sample chops used.

Their creative project incorporates elements of lo-fi garage, tremolo guitars, theremin and organ echoes. Haunting melodies swagger over hip-hop rhythms put to dusty, tape-infused desert soundtracks.

“Break Up Artist” is a single from their forthcoming “Grave Turners” full-length. The album is well into production and further details will be announced.
